TMJ
TMJ, TMD, and TMJ Disorder What's the Difference?
Technically, TMJ refers to the actual temporomandibular joints, the two joints on both sides of your head that connect your skull to your jaw bone and allow you to move your mouth. While TMD and TMJ disorder refers to any complication that affects your TMJ and causes intense, radiating pain.
However, many patients use TMJ as a blanket term to mean TMD. Because of this, many dentists are accustomed to the three acronyms being interchangeable. If you use any of them in our office, we will understand what you mean.
What Is TMJ Disorder? Any condition affecting your TMJ
/
TMD is any condition that affects the function of your TMJ and causes pain when doing normal activities that activate that joint such as speaking, chewing, and opening your mouth. If left untreated, TMJ disorder can lead to severe oral and even physical health issues.
The Causes Of TMJ Disorder
Bruxism
Years of bruxism (teeth grinding) or jaw clenching can wear down your teeth and put added stress on your temporomandibular joint, and if left untreated, can lead to TMD.
Misaligned Bite
Missing teeth or teeth out of dental alignment can cause a misaligned bite. This causes the force of your bite to be unevenly distributed which affects the natural movement of your temporomandibular joint, leading to TMD.
Injury
Some TMJ disorders are caused by an injury to the face that caused trauma to your temporomandibular joint. The risk of developing TMD is even greater if the injury affected the function of your TMJ.
Arthritis
If you suffer from arthritis, you are at greater risk of developing TMD. The swelling of your temporomandibular joint can affect the function of your jaw and lead to TMD.

The Diagnosis Of TMD
Scheduling an appointment at our Staten Island office is the first step in diagnosing your TMJ disorder.
Often patients suffering from facial pain don't know the root cause is TMD
Treatment Of TMJ Disorder
If Dr. Mormino determines the cause of your TMD to be a result of bruxism or jaw clenching, he will recommend a custom-made oral splint. He will start by taking impressions of your teeth so the oral splint created will fit snugly and comfortably over your teeth. An oral splint works by preventing your teeth from touching while you sleep as most are worn at night, however, it might be recommended that you wear your splint throughout the day if it is a more severe form of TMD. This oral splint can significantly reduce the stress placed on your jaw as a result of repeated grinding or clenching of your teeth.
